Paranormal Activity will continue to work its way backward through the story next month when the third installment of the horror franchise hits theaters. Paramount released the creepy new poster for the film, which is set in the late-’80’s.

At this point, I’m running on the assumption that we’ve all seen the first two films. If you haven’t and you don’t want to be spoiled, ignore the text and feast your eyes on the poster below. For those of you who caught the original 2007 film, and the sequel that followed, you know that the “villain” is some kind of supernatural presence haunting a woman named Katie. In the sequel, which takes place mostly before the original film, the creepy ghost-thing is haunting Katie’s sister Kristi. While the sequel didn’t quite capture the fantastic simplicity of the first one, PA2 did tie the two films together nicely in the end. References to the haunting dating back to their childhoods certainly left the story open for a prequel.

Paranormal Activity 3 will take the story further back, showing us the days references in the first two films, when Kristi and Katie were haunted by whatever this possessing ghost-monster-thing is.

The poster below shows the two young girls, asleep in their beds. Between them on the wall is the shadow.

If you haven’t seen the trailer for the film yet, you can watch it here. With the film set in 1988, I expect the video equipment to be much bigger and maybe even of significantly lower quality. In some ways, that could enhance the creep-factor of the film. Where both of the orignals shined was less in what we did see, and more in what we didn’t.

Paranormal Activity 3 heads into theaters October 21st. For more on the movie visit its page in our Blend Film Database.
