Paul Newman, the star of Cool Hand Luke, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and countless other classic movies, has died at age 83. Rumors of his poor health had surrounded him for months, and his spokeswoman confirmed to The New York Times this morning that the cause of death was cancer. No other details were available.

Newman has become more famous in recent years, of course, for his popcorn, cookies, lemonade and more, all of which were sold to benefit his many charities. The proceeds from the Newman's Own brand have brought in more than $250 million in charity donations.

Though it's been fairly clear for some months now that Newman was ailing, and he has led an excellent life by any measure, the news is still heartbreaking. An icon of both the movies and American life, Newman leaves behind his wife of 50 years, Joanne Woodward, an expansive family, and legions of fans across the world who still weren't ready to see him go, even after his half-a-century career in the movies.
