Paul Thomas Anderson May Be Headed To Vegas

It’s always been hard to pinpoint what Paul Thomas Anderson might do next, given that he’s always vacillated between movies about crime (Hard Eight), nostalgia (Boogie Nights) or just straight-up depression (Magnolia). But just how do you follow up the remarkable, perhaps even ground-breaking There Will Be Blood? Well, Cigarettes and Red Vines think they’ve got the answer, or at least a pretty good rumor.

They say PTA is at work on a movie with Jack Nicholson, of all people, called Power Play. It’s “about a gambling entrepreneur from a Native American casino who decides to take on Las Vegas.” The movie is based on the novel by Peter Bart, according to Cigarettes, and as reported by Slate, Bart sold the rights to Paramount back in 1998. Bart is the editor-in-chief of Variety, and apparently the sale was in violation of Variety policy and got him into a heap of trouble.

The idea of Anderson doing a movie in Vegas is a little strange, given that the location has been so overexposed by the Ocean’s series. But he’s just proven how well he can tell a story about an ambitious man overcoming obstacles, and seeing him pair up with Jack Nicholson could produce fascinating results. But again, this is just a rumor. Take it with a grain of salt. For all we know, PTA’s working on the Smurfs movie.

Jack Nicholson in an Anderson film? Now that's what I'd like to see! Who could forget his hilarious 1989 performance as the Joker (passe as it may be now), or his highly cynical attitude in "As Good As It Gets"? Ladies and gentlemen, here is an actor just begging to be placed in a PTA-kinda film - and, dare I say it, PTA movies desperately need an actor like Nicholson to brighten up their own melancholy. But not only has Vegas been featured in film from coast to coast, hasn't a similar plot already been covered in Anderson's Hard Eight? The two have so much to capitalize on. Let's see something else for a change!

P. S. PTA doing Smurfs?? What kind of dark and depressing ending are we to look forward to? HELP! I don't want to see children bursting out of the theaters in tears! :D
