The Farrelly Brothers have found their Three Stooges. Variety says Sean Penn is locked up to play Larry, Jim Carrey is in negotiations to play Curly, and Benicio Del Toro is MGM Studios’ target to play Moe.

Penn has been rumored to be in this for awhile, but Carrey and Del Toro are new. Jim may seem a little on the skinny side to play the normally stout, bald-headed Curly but word is that he’s vowed to gain 40 lbs. I’m not sure that’ll help. Even a fat Jim Carrey won’t look much like Curly. At least we know Carrey has a Three Stooges friendly sense of humor. Last I checked Penn had no detectable sense of humor and Benicio Del Toro was part wolfman. Odd choices for this kind of film.

No mention of Johnny Depp, who had at one point been rumored to be in the running for a role. Maybe they’ll need a Shemp.
