Late Friday we brought you an exciting rumor from a site called MarketSaw in which they claimed a reliable source had told them Peter Jackson was set to direct a 3D version of The Hobbit. Since then, entertainment reporters the world over have been desperately clawing at their computers, hoping to debunk their rumor and win the eternal game of ego-stroking that we all seem to play.
The first site to whip it out and show it to ya is AICN, where they say the rumor isn’t true. As proof, they offer the vague statement that they “contacted Jackson’s camp and got a resounding ‘not true’”. If there’s a way to be more vague about it, I don’t know what it is. Who did they talk to in Jackson’s “camp”? What does his “camp” consist of? Did AICN interview Peter Jackson’s window washer or did they talk to his publicist? Actually, I’m not really sure which would be more trustworthy, if either.
Their rumor debunk actually seems even more suspicious than the original rumor itself. If they verified it with official sources, then they should be able to name those sources. What’s with all the obfuscation AICN? And how did you manage to contact them over the weekend, when most offices are closed? I’ve been trying to reach someone at Wingnut since late Friday, and haven’t been able to get any action. I guess I need a Hobbitphone, or a direct line to Peter Jackson’s boyhood scoutmaster. I’m just guessing that’s what they meant by “camp”.
Meanwhile, the guys over at MarketSaw have responded, and are standing by their scoop. They point out that even if their scoop is right, Jackson’s “camp” (whoever that is) might not be able to admit it. If it’s a deal in progress, they wouldn’t want to spill the beans for fear of ruining it. AICN insists that Peter Jackson doesn’t have time to do The Hobbit right now, but MarketSaw counters with the fact that their source says that there’s one to two years of leeway for PJ to work with.
So, while we still don’t have a confirmation that this Peter Jackson for Hobbit 3D is true, I for one am not entirely ready to call it dead. I am however, entirely ready to be bored with watching movie websites play whip it out and measure.

I have just posted on my site that I think the whole thing is getting blown way out of proportion - yeah, I started it with the news, but I do trust my sources a great deal. I did say that I don't want to be another 'soap opera' movie site (you know who you are!), but instead want to remain true to the 3D movies and technology that Marketsaw is knwon for.
I intend to get back to business ASAP. As far as AICN? I will fight fire with fire for now. Stay tuned for more details.
Then, it's back to business. Thanks for your stable view on things Josh.
