Peter Jackson is finally getting around to directing that “little” movie he originally promised he’d do between Lord of the Rings and King Kong. It took longer than expected, but Variety says a spec script for Lovely Bones is being shopped around to Hollywood for funding and backers.

The script was co-written by the same team that put together the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Philippa Boyens wrote it together. It’s been sent around to every major studio, except of course those bastards over at New Line who are still doing their damndest to screw PJ over by ruining The Hobbit.

At this point, I doubt Jackson cares. He’s Peter Jackson and Lovely Bones, smaller film or not, is sure to inspire a massive bidding war between the other heads of Hollywood, you know, the ones who prefer money to petty he-said/she-said arguments.

Lovely Bones is based on a book by Alice Sebald. In it a 14-year-old girl is raped and killed. Her spirit is unhappy with this, and hangs around to keep watch over her family and her killer. Sounds a little like Peter Jackson’s Pan’s Labyrinth to me, and why not. Before he was lord of the hobbits he had a thing for horror, and was birthed from the same genre that brought forth Guillermo Del Toro.
