Sony’s Spider-Man reboot is continuing forward and, even though it’s completely unnecessary and mostly unwanted, at least it seems like they’re trying to do a few things differently than the original, not that old, already perfect, first Spider-Man movie. I mean sure, it looks like we’re going to have to suffer through the origin story all over again even though it’s still pretty fresh in our minds and everyone’s pretty much sick of superhero origin stories, but at least they’re going to show it to us in a slightly different way. I guess that makes it all worth it.

Proof of this comes from Whats Playing where they say that as part of Peter Parker’s origin story we’ll see his biological parents for the first time. Word is that Sony is casting an actor of around 8 or 9 years old to play Peter in a scene with his parents in which the film will explain how he came to live with May and Ben. That means Peter will not only remember his parents, he'll have been partially raised by them.

The death of Peter Parker's parents has been told several different ways in the comics. The classic and official version according to Marvel is that they were killed when he was a baby, leaving Peter to be raised by his Aunt May and Uncle Ben. That’s always resonated the most with me, it makes the impact of Ben’s death even bigger, as the only father Peter has ever known. Now though, Peter Parker won’t exactly be entirely raised by Aunt May and Uncle Ben, they’ll just take care of the last bit, finishing up the job his parents already started. And since this will be the second time he's had his father killed, well you've got to think he's starting to get used to it.

But hey, at least it’s different from the way Sam Raimi did it! Well, different as long as you’ve never heard of Batman. Whoops. Aunt May is now sort of like Peter Parker’s Alfred. Different for different’s sake strikes me as a fairly certain recipe for disaster. I’m looking at you Greedo shoots first. Hopefully this is one rumor which doesn’t pan out.
