Pierre Morel Picks Alien Invasion Film Earth Defense Force

Pierre Morel, who has abandoned both Dune and the Ouija Board movie in recent weeks, has finally figured out how he actually wants to spend his time. THR reports that he has moved on to EDF, also known as Earth Defense Force, a large-scale alien invasion movie set up at Warner Bros.

It's an odd time to be pitching an alien invasion movie in the wake of the disastrously bad Skyline, but Morel's version promises to be a lot better funded if not also somewhat ludicrous (he is the man who brought us Taken, after all). The film starts after an initial alien attack has defeated much of the planet, and the world's leaders band together to assemble a space fighting force to prepare for the next wave of attacks. It sounds as large scale and sci-fi friendly as the Dune remake he passed on, but with the added benefit of being something original-- say what you will about the logical fallacies of Morel's movies, but the stories he tells are usually fairly singular. I have no idea how his project will distinguish itself from Peter Berg's Battleship, another forthcoming action movie about the earth defending itself from aliens and yada yada, but with Morel behind it, it'll at least be a little different from the rest.
