Shawn Levy’s on a roll. His latest, the robot-boxing drama Real Steel, is contending at the box office. He’s producing Neighborhood Watch with Ben Stiller and Vince Vaughn, and is preparing a Frankenstein feature from a Max Landis screenplay. And 20th Century Fox just snatched up what they’re hoping will be Levy’s next directorial effort once he puts Frankenstein to bed.

The studio grabbed the rights to Michael Vukadinovich’s The Three Misfortunes of Geppetto, which Deadline says is a prequel to the classic Pinocchio story. I guess a Pinocchio prequel would have to focus on Geppetto, as the puppet’s early days consisted of him being a piece of wood. The puppet maker, on the other hand, lives a life of “misfortune, war and adventure all to be with Julia Moon, his true love,” according to the site. They also compare the project, in scope, to Tim Burton’s Big Fish or Rob Reiner’s The Princess Bride, which suggests a mix of swashbuckling action and humor.

Prequels are trying to become the new sequel in Hollywood. So are fairy tales. We have two Snow White films working their way to theaters, each putting a fresh spin on a timeless tale. I’m not sure how a Geppetto prequel will ever get around to including Pinocchio. But an adventured centered around the early years of the beloved character could go in million different directions. Levy’s career options also seem plentiful. In addition to Frankenstein and Gepetto, the director has been teasing a Real Steel sequel.
