Piranha Swims Back To August![]()
If you're a horror fan, you undoubtedly have heard that Joe Dante's 1978 horror/comedy masterpiece (that's maybe an overstatement) Piranha is getting the remake treatment over at the Weinstein Company. Behind the lens is Alex Aja, whose somewhat spotty resume shows that he at least can make a bad movie look good, having done High Tension and the 2008 Kiefer Sutherland vehicle Mirrors (The end of that movie is straight terrifying. Go check it out.)
You've probably also heard, though, that the Weinstein Company was barely keeping its head above water in 2009, putting the future of the company in two films, Halloween 2, and the reason they're still alive today, Inglourious Basterds. Now, according to the ever vigilant horror freaks over at Shock Till You Drop, it looks like the financial sting is filtering down to Piranha in more ways than one. First, the film's release has been kicked back by four months from April to August. The company claims it's to get it out of competition with Matthew Vaughn's Kick-Ass and the decision is in no way related to finances, but it's easy to see that they just don't have the money to put the film out. Second, which gives more backing to the financial argument, SYTD's sources are telling them that the aptly titled Piranha 3-D will not actually be released in 3-D, despite Aja embracing the technology and filming for it. That seems counter intuitive. The fates will decide just what will ultimately happen to the tale of furious fishies, but for now you're going to have to wait until at least August to see this film come to light. We'll let you know if/when the film or company totally sink. |
