Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest sailed into theaters this weekend and absolutely plundered the box office for all it was worth, setting a couple of records along the way. The movie took top honors for the most money made over a 3-day opening weekend, hauling in over $130 million and absolutely trouncing Spider-man which had comfortably held the record since 2002 with $115 million. For icing on the cake, Pirates 2 also stole earned more booty in a single day than any other film, bringing in $55 million and nosing out Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith's previous record of $50 million.
While Dead Man's Chest was raking in more than all other movies in theaters combined, some of those movies fared better than others. The pirates' presence didn't seem to hinder The Devil Wears Prada. The Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway drama/comedy only dropped 44%, holding third place with a comfortable $15.6 million. Likewise, Superman dropped one spot into second place, but took a slightly harder hit, dropping nearly 60%, only earning $21 million.
The quirky, semi-animated A Scanner Darkly opened limited in 17 theaters and managed nearly half a million, a solid $23,882 per theater, second only to Pirates' $31,944. Warner Independent seems unsure of A Scanner Darkly's ability to impress or entertain a broader audience and the film is only receiving a modest release with slowly expanding openings into early August. Depending on how well its received will likely determine if it makes it past the big city markets. So far things look good, but few movies fail miserably in such limited release. Matters will be a little clearer next week when it expands to 170 screens.
Next week also sees the arrival of two of the least anticipated movies of the summer. The Wayans brothers return and this time, God help us, they've discovered special effects. The more-annoying-than-amusing duo debut Little Man, in which Marlon's head is superimposed on the body of a child. More accurate would be a child's head imposed on his adult body, but that wouldn't be nearly as creepy looking. Owen Wilson's You, Me and Dupree also hits theaters, looking to bring with it even more lack luster comedy and Wayan's-worthy infantile humor.
The question for next weekend lies in how the veterans from this week will fair against the incoming weak competition. Dead Man's Chest has gotten mixed response from viewing audiences as compared to its predecessor, but many agree its the best joy-ride of the summer. Will it have enough repeat business to hold onto its number one spot? Absolutely. Even if it drops a hefty 70% next weekend, that's still $40 million and hopefully enough to stay ahead of Dupree and Little Man. Expect both Prada and Superman to slip below the two newcomers, though. I hate to think that either film wouldn't be able to stand strong against the likes of Little Man, but it will be the third week out for both movies and this is the year in which Scary Movie 4 made a baffling $40 million on its opening weekend.
