Pixar Talks John Carter Of Mars

By Josh Tyler: 2008-09-28 16:41:33
Pixar Talks John Carter Of Mars Disney/Pixar still has a movie version of John Carter of Mars in pre-production. Andrew Stanton, who is writing and directing the film, recently talked to Sci Fi Wire and continued to play coy when it comes to telling us what they’re doing with the project. Stanton says, “I'm going to do what I remember more than what they exactly do,” referring to the books. That’s an odd way to handle an adaptation, based on vague memories. Doesn’t sound like John Carter purists are going to be pleased.

Stanton, who most recently wrote and directed WALL-E, does however obviously have an eye for science fiction material. And he says that whatever they do, it’ll be a completely unique.

Pixar general manager Jim Morris promises the film will have a look unlike any other. Says Morris, “Everything that's been out there has been an attempt to kind of capture this Deco-esque [Frank] Frazetta vision of John Carter, which I think feels old and stale… And where Stanton is going--from what we've seen so far--is very different than that. And I think that the people who really love the essence of the books will really dig it, but so will audiences in general.”

We still don’t know if this is a live-action movie or if it’s animated. It’s a Pixar project, so that suggests animation, but with it’s naked women and hardcore violence, it’s a more adult science fiction story, one which would seem to demand a live-action take… unless of course your adaptation is based only on whatever fuzzy impressions you have of the story from reading it as a kid. When asked flat out of this is a live action movie or an animated one, all Morris could offer is, “We are looking at a variety of different approaches and techniques for that ... We're kind of a bit early in the development of that.”

If you’re a John Carter fan, I suppose you should just be happy someone is finally making it, after years in development hell. And it’s Pixar, and where there’s Pixar there is hope. Just don’t expect naked alien women.

  • This does not bode well!

Why bother even associating this film with the Barsoom series of books? It doesn't sound like it's gonna have much to do with them. Just call it something else and let someone who cares about the books and will do justice, and stay faithful, to them, make the film. It's not rocket science. You've got a solid story that will make an easy transition to a stunning screenplay. We don't want to have to suffer some lame-arsed half baked directors "vision".

Producers, contact me and I'll write you a screenplay that will please both the fans and your accountants whilst doing the books justice.

PS. It may sound comical to those who don't know Barsoom but the violence and naked beings are an essential aspect of what makes Barsoom, Barsoom.
  • If there's no naked alien women then what's the point?
  • If there's no naked alien women then what's the point?
  • Frazetta is old and STALE?? Oh, that does NOT bode well. Frazetta's imagery is what we (JC Fans) all have in our heads of how it looks, how it smells. You could get away with a little deviation, but to totally throw it out the window? Then again, this Andrew guy says he's going to write based on what he "remembers" not what was actually written. Oh, Dear, Lord. If you're going to do something, DO IT RIGHT or DON'T DO IT AT ALL! This may be the first Pixar film I actually dislike.
  • Sir, the Barsoom series is a classic, and deserves to be filmed by someone who has acutaly read the books. Of course drop some of the more unbeleavable aspects, set a million years ago when Mars was a lush world, not todays airless desert. But keep the fantasy alive with live action over CGI, as Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow. By the way, Frank Frazetta is not stale! I would really apreaciate a more adult version of Barsoom and not some fuzzy take with cute robots. Keep the sex and violence real.
  • So it won't be true to the books, and the writer/director thinks that Frank Frazetta's work is "old and stale." How could this idiot have brought us something as cool as Wall-e? Get ready -- hollywood's gonna butcher another classic.
  • This would be good it it was, well, good. The animation has to be right, it has to be gritty, but it has to be good, not like Beowulf. Beowulf mostly sucked.
