Point Break Gets A Sequel

By Rafe Telsch: 2007-11-04 09:39:08
Point Break Gets A Sequel I’ll concede that Point Break has its cult following, much like just about any Patrick Swayze flick. I find it funny that the people who like Point Break tend to be the same ones who criticize Keanu Reeves’s surfer-dude style of acting, which the movie helped solidify. Admittedly, it is a fun little action flick, but it’s twenty years old, which means it should just rest in the annals of cult-action movie history, right? Wrong.

As with any good movie that’s twenty years old, Point Break has been slated for a sequel, reports Coming Soon. Point Break 2 has been given a $20-30 million budget and will be written and directed by the original film’s writer, Peter Illiff. The plan is for the film to begin filming in mid-2008 in Southeast Asia, partially because some of the film’s financing is coming from RGM Entertainment, a Singapore-based company.

The sequel will pick up where the original film left off, following a Navy soldier who is recruited to infiltrate a gang of criminals in Southeast Asia. That doesn’t sound as much like a sequel as a revamp of the original movie’s plot, especially since the main character is an ex-surfer. It’s unlikely Keanu Reeves would come back for a sequel like this, at least not in a leading part, so expect whoever looks good without a shirt on to be under consideration for the leading role.

As with all needless sequels, expect Point Break 2 to answer ambiguous questions left by the first film (because we really don’t want to leave anything to the audience’s imagination). For instance, viewers will get a resolution for Bodhi, the Patrick Swayze character who disappeared into a giant wave in the first movie’s conclusion.

that's cool that there's gonna be a sequel to "point break" but it wouldnt be the same without keanu reeves as johnny utah-but one thing that is incorrect -"point break" isn't twenty years old it came out in 1991 -so if the sequel is done and possibly released in 2008 that only means a seventeen year wait.

  1. Kris Says:

Dude, Bodhi died, we all know it...

The original movie rocked, especially if one was a fan of Swayze or Reeves. It was what it was -- and it was not Citizen Kane, but neither was it the worst of Ed Wood.

The sequel would have to stand on its own terms, but could be o.k. if it retains the spirit
of the original. And maybe they'll get into the surf groove and have lots of clever shots of surfers.

I'm willing to give it a chance.

  1. LZ Says:

Point Break was a great action movie, very under-rated. It was beautifully filmed with a great ending. No other film has captured that spirit of extreme sport surfing and sky diving thrill.

  1. Johnny Utah Says:

This was one of my all-time favorites. I don't think they could bring back Bodhi...he totally died. And if Reeves is now too big for this role, leave it that way. Some ppl forget where they came from. Either way, good news that the writer will be the writer/director for the sequel. This way you know some dingleberry wont ruin the legacy. Any ideas when it hits the big screen? 2009?

  1. Daniel Says:

The first movie was great. The way bodhi come of the wave at bells could have been planned for a fake death to get the authorities of his back. He could of had Scuba divers waiting, or he might have washed a shore and put in prison. The new movie could take of when he gets realeased or escapes from prison. Or maybe im just a wanna be writer!
