Producers Guild Goes For Sci-Fi With Nods To Star Trek And District 9![]()
The Producers Guild of America have announced their nominees for the top films of 2009, having expanded their list to 10 after the Academy did the same. While the list includes some expected awards-season favorites-- The Hurt Locker, Up in the Air-- it packs some surprises as well, and some great ones for fans of sci-fi. Along with Avatar's expected nomination, both District 9 and Star Trek made the list, both films that might have been considered too sci-fi or too popular for the group in the past.
Making history was Up, which became the first movie ever to receive both a Best Animated Feature and a Best Picture nomination from the group. Up shared the Best Animated category with 9, The Fantastic Mr. Fox, Coralineand The Princess and the Frog. You can see the full list of nominees below. The question now becomes how the PGA's choices will reflect the Academy's, particularly given that the PGA is the only guild (unlike Directors Guild or Writers Guild) that picks 10 Best Picture nominees. Given how surprising it is that both Star Trek and District 9 made it in, I'd expect one to fall by the wayside in favor of A Serious Man or, gulp, Nine (though Nine's snub here solidifies belief that its Oscar chances are over). Still, it's a great moment for sci-fi either way, particularly given how much trouble the genre has had winning awards in the past (Star Wars lost Best Picture!) Now if only we could have gotten Moon on that list. Darryl F.
