If you haven't yet heard that Frankenstein is the latest monster trend to crop up in Hollywood, don't worry-- none of these movies have actually gone into production yet. But if you also can't keep track of all the different Frankenstein movies in development out there, don't worry about that either-- there's no fewer than four movies in the works out there inspired by the famous doctor and his piece-together monster, with names like Sam Raimi, Guillermo del Toro and even Guns n Roses guitarist Slash attached. The project in the news today at Deadline is the Raimi one, an adaptation of Peter Ackroyd's novel The Casebook of Victor Frankenstein, which now has Proof playwright David Auburn attached to write the script.

This one takes a slightly meta take on the story, introducing us to Dr. Frankenstein in his early years of experimentation, egged on by both the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley and his wife Mary Shelley, who eventually would up writing the famous Frankenstein novel. Raimi is only involved as a producer through his Ghost House Pictures, along with Rob Tapert, though bringing on a Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright to adapt the script indicates that they're bringing in at least a few big fish to bring this story to the screen. It's unclear which of these Franken-movies will be going into production first, though if all of them remain in the works we may have another dueling projects arm race, a la the two coming Snow White films, to look forward to in the next year or so.
