Hold on to your limited edition phaser replicas science fiction fans, Rachel McAdams is headed for your genre. TMZ reports that she's in negotiations to play the lead in a new movie called The Time Traveler's Wife, based on a bestselling novel which no one has ever heard of. It's amazing how many of those there are.

But far be it from an up and coming starlet like Rachel McAdams to totally geek out. It's not like she's doing Star Trek. Though the movie is about time travel, it's also part romantic comedy. It's the story of a dashing librarian whisked around in time. During unwanted travels he encounters a girl named Clare, and they fall in love. One problem. While she moves normally through time he keeps leaping forward, showing up at different points in her life leaving the pair permanently out of sync.

Rachel will play Clare if she signs on board, and while they haven't actually hired a director it sounds like New Line is close. Supposedly they're stuck picking between Stephen Frears and Flightplan's Robert Schwentke.

While my nerd parts tend to get tingly at the mere thought of Rachel in anything even resembling science fiction, she seems to have picked the one sci-fi role which most closely resembles the sort of stuff she and any run of the mill Hollywood babe would have done. Oh well, they can't all be Red Eye. No phaser pistols or transporters in this sci-fi movie, but it's got Rachel McAdams. What more could a geekboy want?
