Raimi And Maguire Go For Spider-Man 4?

By Josh Tyler: 2008-06-06 04:56:36
Raimi And Maguire Go For Spider-Man 4? Spider-Man 4 is starting to web together. The smell of money has made it impossible for Sony not to make a fourth Spidey entry, and it’s even starting to look like they may lure back most of the primaries from the first three movies.

By primaries, I of course mean Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire. IESB recently spoke with J.K. Simmons who plays J. Jonah Jameson in the first three movies, and the way he tells it, things are looking up for their involvement. Says Simmons, “I spoke to Tobey in, I guess it was February…sort of awards season time and, y’know, he’s certainly amenable to doing some more and hopefully we’ll be able to get everybody back and make another good one.”

I wonder if Tobey’s re-interest in the franchise has anything to do with Sony’s fervent commitment to get him back? Last week there was a rumor going around that Sony would replace him, and Sony’s reps were quick to squash it as completely false. While of course they didn’t say that Tobey was back, the fact that they’re worried about even the hint of someone else playing the part out there makes you think they’re working to get Tobey back, and don’t want anything getting in the way. We can only hope.

Meanwhile, Spidey director Sam Raimi also expressed his interest in Spider-Man 4 this week. He tells CS that he’s excited to read the script James Vanderbilt is working on and that he’s “hoping it's as great as our discussions were about it and I'm hoping it feels right for me because I love Spider-Man. I'm hoping I'm well rested enough to embrace it and I'm hoping Sony wants me to do it. If all of those things come together, I would love to do it.”

After all the rumor and speculation over whether Raimi and Maguire would return, it was starting to seem like but certain that at least one, if not both would not be a part of the fourth movie. Now though, things are definitely looking up. And before you start bitching about Spider-Man 3… come on, it really wasn’t that bad. This revisionist bullshit game everyone is playing where we all pretend we hated it when at the time it came out we didn’t is getting a little tiresome. I was there. You didn’t hate it. It wasn’t as good as the other two, but Spider-Man 3 was still better than most of the other superhero dreck we’ve been saddled with. This group still has some life in them. Bring on a fourth Raimi/Tobey Spider-Man!

  • Spiderman 3 was worse than Superman Returns, and that movie was horrible. Now, if any movie really gets panned by critics, it's X-Men 3. Yes, I know, I know, Ratner made it, I know, but honestly, it was fun, it was action-packed, and it had pivitol plot points that really added to the franchise rather than taking away from it. Overall, people bash that one more than Spiderman 3, and it really doesn't deserve all that negative criticism. It's actually a pretty okay film.
  • i really think ppl overblow how bad spider-man 3 was. it wasn't THAT bad. to be honest it's not my favorite of the three films but it definitely doesn't render the kind of comments i've read about it. ppl mainly focus on the nightclub sequence as out of sync or whatever. that's one scene. i don't think you can judge a film or someone's ability to make a film on one scene.

i thnk the blame for "screwing up" the third film lies heavily on sony and marvel. marvel wanted raimi to add venom when he already had a script done with the sandman as the villain (there was also no gwen stacy in that script). we all have bosses and we have all been in situations when you had an idea on how to do something and it's totally doable but the powers that be have other ideas they want incorporated. so down with all the raimi bashing.
  • There is nothing revisionist about hating Spiderman 3, it was a horrible movie. I went to see it in the theatre because I was psyched that they finally put one of the baddest characters in the Marvel Universe, Venom, in the movie. Topher Grace was horrible, and so was the rest of the cast, including Maguire. The whole emo thing literally had everyone in the theatre dieing laughing, and not for the right reasons. Terrible movie.
  • Just give Raimi the reins and let him do what he wants. He had control over the first two, they were great, and the studio butted in on the 3rd and it was panned by fans and critics. Think the studio will learn the lesson here?
  • revisionist bullshit game? Serious? Spiderman 3 was probably close to the worst superhero movie ever made. Wanna make tobey anymore gayer than an emo idiot? And don;t get me wrong, I love raimi! But c'mon? Guy screwed up 3. Venom storyline? Horrible! FX? HOrrible! They should have spent the extra money and got ILM to do the FX. Transformers looked amazing...so did Iron Man. And everyone quit bitching about Michael Bay! Raimi needs to take a brean from Spidey and head out with Bruce Campbell to get that damn Ash sequel done dammit!
  • Eh... I saw Spider-Man 3 in the theater... and I hated it. This isn't revisionist on my part, it's the truth. I saw the movie once, couldn't stand it, and will never see it again. That being said, let's hope that if everyone is back for 4 and 5, then those two movies will live up to the quality of the first two and erase the horrid memories of SM3.
