We’ve talked before about the potentially dismal future of the Jack Ryan franchise. Several months ago Paramount announced its intention to move forward with the character in the movies, regardless of the lack material from creator Tom Clancy. Other familiar names to the franchise like stars Harrison Ford or Ben Affleck and director Phillip Noyce have also been pushed to the side. Don’t completely give up hope, however, because Paramount may have just pushed a new Jack Ryan movie back on the right track.
Previous rumors have put City of God director Fernando Meirelles as a contender to head the next Jack Ryan movie, tentatively titled By Any Means Necessary (and rumored to star Ryan Gosling as Ryan). According to Variety, Meirelles isn’t the frontrunner anymore, as Paramount has announced that its in negotiations with Spider-Man director Sam Raimi to develop and direct a series of Jack Ryan movies.
Neither Gosling nor that tentative title are mentioned, so everything we heard previously about the movie may be in the trash can as Paramount plans to start fresh with Raimi. The one thing that does seem to hold true is the idea of focusing on a younger Jack Ryan, at a “more formative point in his career” then other movies have shown him. The character may be moved to modern times as well.
The director would move onto the Jack Ryan movie after finishing up his current picture Drag Me to Hell at Universal. He’d have to commit to doing the Ryan picture next, however because Paramount wants the movie in theaters by 2010. This could affect Raimi’s ability to be involved with other franchises fans have been hoping for, such as another Spider-Man movie or The Hobbit if Guillermo del Toro bowed out.
Raimi is definitely an interesting pick to take on the stories of the CIA analyst. I’m not sure I would have immediately thought of his name as a director to handle the intrigue stories, but then again I wouldn’t have immediately connected him with Spider-Man either. While Raimi’s attachment would give a lot of people a better feeling about a Clancy-less future for Jack Ryan, I maintain hope that Raimi will eventually put out a fourth Spidey picture. Can someone clone the director now so he can make everyone’s dreams come true?
