Rainn Wilson has spent the last two and a half years on NBC’s ‘The Office’ creating what could be one of the best characters in television history, Dwight K. Schrute. Better than Rerun from ‘What’s Happening,' you ask? Yes, better even than that icon. Maybe not top 10, but certainly in the top 50 somewhere. The jury is still out though, on if he can convert his undeniable talent, charm, and popularity into some sort of movie success. I saw The Last Mimzy, and while I recommend it as a DVD rental, it didn’t wow the critics or the public. However, he’s going to try his first starring role in the DreamWorks comedy Girlfriend Experience.
Variety says that Wilson will play a geek who hires a prostitute to pretend to be his girlfriend. He came up with the concept himself and approached cousins Mark and Brian Gunn to write the screenplay. The Gunns wrote the script for Mighty Mouse and Juvie, a vehicle for Wilson’s TV boss Steve Carell. Brian Gunn is also the brother-in-law of “The Office” cutie-pie Jenna Fischer. That would certainly make Thanksgiving more interesting. A director has not been named.
I’m not sure if the whole “paying someone to be your girlfriend” sub-genre of comedy has been exhausted. Ever since Patrick Dempsy paid out his hard earned lawn mowing money to make Amanda Peterson like him in 1987’s Can’t Buy Me Love, movies show up every few years about a nerdy guy using cold hard cash to get what looks and personality fail to obtain. But I’m certainly going to give Wilson the benefit of the doubt. Let’s hope his post TV career ends up more Bill Murray than Michael Richards.
