Rami Malek Moving From Twilight: Breaking Dawn To PT Anderson's Latest![]()
Rami Malek’s only been on the scene a few years, but he’s already shown a propensity for balancing large-scale blockbusters with legitimate dramatic projects that challenge him as an actor. Yes, he starred as Ahkmenrah in the original Night at the Museum, but he followed that with stints on 24 and The Pacific. And yes, he’s about to reach the stratosphere as a member of the Twilight: Breaking Dawn ensemble, but Malek’s making sure to follow that up with what sounds like an actor’s dream project.
Malek has been cast in Paul Thomas Anderson’s developing and untitled religious drama (formally known as The Master), according to Variety. He'll play the son-in-law of PTA’s main character (Philip Seymour Hoffman), the inventor of a new faith system that, according to reports, mirrors Scientology. Joaquin Phoenix also has been cast in the film as a broken-down alcoholic who buys into Hoffman’s system and becomes his top disciple only to begin questioning him down the line. As reported on Tuesday, the cast also includes Laura Dern, Jesse Plemons and David Warshofsky. No matter the role, scoring a part in an Anderson production is a major coup for a young actor. So while tweens will be lined up around the block to see what Malek does with the character of Benjamin in Bill Condon’s Breaking Dawn adaptations, I’m anxious to see if he’ll be able to hold his own alongside the likes of Hoffman and Phoenix under the watchful eye of a genius like Anderson. |
