Universal is remaking a 1939 comedy called Midnight for Reese Witherspoon to star in. The original is about a destitute woman in Paris used by a wealthy man trying to get rid of the gigolo wooing his wife. Gigolo is the nice term they used to use for assholes back in the 30s. I guess they thought wife stealing was cute.
The Hollywood Reporter says the new version will be written by Michael Arndt, who won an Oscar this year for Little Miss Sunshine. Arndt told them, that Midnight has "long been one of my favorite films, and it is easily one of the best comedies of the '30s." I’m not sure that means anything. It’s not like there’s much competition for that title. Movies didn’t get really funny till the 40s. Before that it was all Charlie Chaplin, pratfalls, and Hitler mustaches.
Midnight will be the next thing Reese Witherspoon does. She’s already finished a movie called Rendition, which should be out in October of this year. She’s currently filming on Sammy, a sort of Dr. Doolittle meets Ghost Whisperer rom-com directed by Lasse Hallstrom.
