Reese Witherspoon Meddles In Middle East

By Josh Tyler: 2006-09-26 00:00:00
Reese Witherspoon Meddles In Middle East Get ready for yet another middle-east political thriller. They've almost become their own sub-genre. The latest, according to FilmJerk will star Reese Witherspoon in the story of a Cairo CIA analyst who's life gets turned upside-down when he watches the Egyptian Secret Police interrogate a foreigner. Reese will play the pregnant American wife of an Egyptian-born chemical engineer living in the US until he's snatched up and sent to a third-world country as a political prisoner.

It's being directed by Tsotsi helmer Gavin Hood, so don't expect it to be a barrel of fun. This sounds like another project that's right in his wheelhouse. The movie's being called Rendition and production gets going this November in the U.S., Morocco, and Gavin's native South Africa.

If Reese hadn't been cast, it's probably the kind of film that audiences would ignore anyway, though I'm sure critics would be quick to bear-hug it. Middle-east and African politics are wildly popular with reviewers, even when the film's they're set in all seem to be incredibly boring. Luckily, before diving into the bound to be depressing Rendition, you'll be able to see Reese in the light, comedic fantasy Penelope this fall.
