Thanks to producer Jon Shestack’s first look deal with New Line, The Ghosts of Girlfriends Past will be put into production for a release date of Christmas 2008. Mark Waters (Mean Girls and Just Like Heaven) has signed on to direct and Matthew McConaughey will star in this seemingly sentimental melodrama, reports Variety.com .

The plot details for the film are currently unknown, but Shestack was brought in to bring comedies, thrillers and other genre films to New Line. It sounds like this one will fall under the comedy genre (perhaps romantic comedy), unless there are actual ghosts of the women McConaughey’s character has murdered and they return for blood-thirsty revenge. Although Christmas and ghosts have a long standing history, chances are this isn’t a true ghost story.
