Remakes And Redos And Concerts, Oh My

By Scott Gwin: 2008-02-01 11:57:32
Remakes And Redos And Concerts, Oh My January has come and gone, but the mediocrity continues. This weekend four new movies will present themselves, and unless you're an eleven year old teenage girl whose parents weren't lucky enough to win Hannah Montana tickets on E-Bay for four hundred dollars apiece, there's not much to get excited about.

Jessica Alba goes where every other pretty face in Hollywood hs gone lately: the horror/thriller flick. Does it really matter what it's about? The Eye [Read The CB Preview] is yet another acclaimed foreign thriller (Hong Kong's Jian Gui) remade for American audiences who can't stand subtitles or leading actresses who aren't busty enough.

Speaking of sexy leading ladies, Eva Longoria Parker opens her new movie, Over Her Dead Body [Read The CB Review]. Rather than get on with her after-life after dying on her wedding day, Eva's character sticks around to haunt her fiancee's next girlfriend. Actresses apparently love to wear wedding dresses in movies, even if they just got done wearing their own. I can't think of any other reason why Eva would take on this project. Of course, after The Heartbreak Kid, just about anything else would be better, right?

Adam Sandler's production company Happy Madison releases its next gamble, Strange Wilderness [Read The CB Preview]. Despite being headlined by the funny Justin Long and the hilarious Steve Zahn, the movie carries an R rating which will make it tough to compete with last week's dumb comedy champion Meet The Spartans, which boasts a PG-13 rating and Carmen Electra shaking her booty (and everything else). Sorry Sandler, but with your higher rating and slightly smarter comedy, you lose in the American arena. Today's audience likes it dumb.

Then we come to the lastest genre of film releases, the theatrical concert. New York's Metropolitcan got this ball rolling in the last few years with live broadcasts of its performances in theaters around the nation. Popular bands, like U2, have jumped on the bandwagon and now Miley Cyrus is following suit. With the almost ridiclous success of her live Hannah Montana tour, there's not doubt Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour [Read The CB Preview] will be the best attended movie of the weekend. Since it's a limited run on only 700 screens, don't expect it to be the biggest money maker.

I'd be kidding myself if I thought any of these movies was going to top Meet The Spartans, but it's likely to be a close race between that, Over Her Dead Body and The Eye. Expect numbers to be lower than usual this weekend since most everyone will be staying home Sunday to watch some little thing called The Super Bowl.
