Though David Fincher’s films seem to be becoming increasingly boring (come on I liked Zodiac but it’s long and brutally slow), a new movie from the director of Se7en and Fight Club remains something of an event. His next flick, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button reunites him with Brad Pitt to tell the high-concept story of a man aging backwards.
The guys over at Filmstalker have dug up an early review of the Benjamin script, so if you’re dying to know what the heck Fincher is up to here’s your chance. The review over at Collider is from a self-admitted David Fincher uber-fan, but the somewhat disappointing thing is that even though he’s a nut for Fincher’s work his review of the script is somewhat mixed. He describes the movie has having a “dream like” quality, and says, “it feels a bit like a more high end Big Fish or The Adventures of Barron Munchausen.”
On the more positive side, it sounds like it could really work as a dark comedy. “The comedy is often pitch black and, depending on how it is visualized, this movie could be amongst the best black comedies in recent memory. There are jokes, even in the serious scenes. And like how Fight Club is a very funny movie at its’ core, Button could well be a movie that grows better with time.”
Click over to Collider if you’re interested in reading the rest of their script review. Be warned, it looks like they’re working from a really old, 2002 draft of the script. The film is currently in post-production, so it’s a safe assumption that the draft they’re reviewing here has undergone changes in the interim.
