Rob Zombie's Halloween: Reader Review

By Josh Tyler: 2007-07-11 12:21:28
Rob Zombie's Halloween: Reader Review Remaking Halloween has always been a dicey proposition and even though Rob Zombie has tried to couch his re-make as a re-imagining come on, we all know what he’s doing. People are skeptical, and rightly so. He’s tinkering with a classic. On the other hand he’s Zombie, and his last movie The Devil’s Rejects showed a tremendous amount of talent for making kickass horror movies the likes of which we haven’t seen since the 70s. So there’s reason to be hopeful.

Now there’s even more reason. This morning a long time friend of mine and the site sent in his review of Zombie’s film, seen at a super secret advance screening this week. He’s asked to go by the name “Captain Spaulding”, but this is a review you can rely on. Here’s CS with an scooper review of Rob Zombie’s Halloween:

Saw Halloween last night thought I’d chime in with my thoughts. First off a bit of background. While I’m a big fan of Rob Zombie to say I was skeptical about the film was an understatement. The first Halloween is sacred text to me, and when script reviews came in along with some rather underwhelming production stuff my skeptism brewed into worry.

Right now though I want to run through the streets yelling “Merry Christmas Bedford Falls” because after suffering defeat at the hands of Busta Rhymes and the interweb Michael Myers is back and just as good as he ever was. Make no mistake this is the second greatest Halloween movie ever made. Rob Zombie has restored the grandeur and menace to one of the greatest horror icons in Cinema one who had long since lost it, and I can only say “Thank you”. And I mean that from the bottom of my heart.

Why not start at the beginning, the much maligned Michael the early years. While this part of the film has flaws its not the disaster that many thought it would be. Zombie doesn’t explain Myer’s evil so much as show it brewing. We sense that Michael himself doesn’t quiet understand why he does the things he does and this dichotomy between a truly this confused young boy and the evil that he does makes for some truly terrifying scenes.

Special mention must be mentioned of Sheri Moon. Sheri Moon played the psychotic baby in Zombies Firefly films, and I must admit while I thought she did a fine job there I assumed that was the only note she had. I was shocked to see her playing such an older sadder person. You see the lines on her face, and her sadness as she’s stuck in a life she can tell she never wanted for herself, working a shit job she’s becoming to old for and married to an asshole, with one daughter heading down the path she herself tripped down, a son who has needs she can’t fufill, and a new baby to see. Moon shows us the characters true desperation and despair and it is incredibly heart breaking.

The sequences in the Mental hospital are the most Zombie like of the picture with his regulars like Danny Trejo and Bill Mosely, showing up and crazy ultraviolence being the order of the day. But then the tone shifts again and when Myers comes home he treats the whole thing not like a giddy slashfest, but almost like a Greek tradegy as a man commits horrible acts driven not by human weakness but by his nature. And here is where we come to the key to the whole thing and why I just might think Halloween is one of the best horror movies in the past five years.

He treats this shit like its actually happening.

About 2/3rds of the way through the film I was shocked to find myself thinking, “Holy shit I actually care about these people.” And the sad thing is I can’t remember the last time that actually happened in a horror film. How many people in all the Saws and Hostels or whatever did you care about above the knee jerk empathic reaction of “Gee that would suck if that happened to me?” None it’s that simple.

Which leads to the second big surprise on the level of Sheri Moon’s acting ability. Rob Zombie can write normal people. While the Firefly clan and their satellites where fun and well written in his first two films, the normals could politely be called “weakly written” and impolitely called “bad”. The kids dialogue was great not just pat cute banter, the teenage girls fairly realistic, and most surprisingly of all the Strode’s homelife was warm and convincing when (SPOILERS) Michael visits them I felt a my stomach drop and not cause it was “cool” or “really ****ed up dude” but because in the short scenes they had Zombie got me to like these people and care about them, I didn’t want to see anything bad happen to them. Amazing (End SPOILERS)

In speaking of which Scout Taylor Compton, who fills in for Jaime Lee gives off such intelligence, strength, and warmth that I find it hard to believe that she is not just as destined for stardom as her predecessor. Maybe the roles charmed who knows? Oh and in case I haven’t mentioned it this shit is scary to. The scene in the pool? Brrr…

Anyway this is a fantastic film that while not as good as the first, stands well on its own two feet. I’ll see it again this August, and proudly display it next to the original when it comes out on DVD. So Mr. Zombie as one fan to another I want to thank you again, from the bottom of my heart.

  • This movie is a shame, a big let down. ROB ZOMBIE HAS DESTROYED THE ALL TIME GREAT HALLOWEEN.He should have never put the blonde girl as the star actress she sucked, He should have stared JAMIE LEE CURTIS NEICE FROM PART 5 OF HALLOWEEN the dark haired one who did not even know who the hell micheal meyers was in this movie and it WAS SAPPOSED TO BE HIS @$#%ING NEICE IN PART 5 HE SHOULD HAVE STUCK TO THE ORIGINALS.
  • I'm a huge fan of the original Halloween and just watched Rob Zombie's remake. What made Zombie think he could capture the one thing that made the original so good? No one, but no one, has John Carpenter's vision. No one could capture the suspense of the first movie like Carpenter and Hill did.

Zombies remake is absolutely terrible. It made Michael Meyers too human. In this movie MM has a soul, where in the original he didn't. And in no way did the MM in this remake even begin to capture the evil MM in the original. This is a total failure of a movie.

What a joke of a movie this remake is. I'll make note that I won't watch any more of Rob Zombie's movies.
  • rob zombie's remake of halloween completely sucks ass and anyone who thinks the opposite is a fucking assholenwith not a clue and film and in this case cinema in particular
the guy has not a clue i saw the film and was absolutely disgusted with it and i nearly fucking pucked the cheek of the guy attempting to remake one of the greatest horror films of all time and what is widely belived to be the starting point for all modern horro today j.c is the man, the fucking clown shows total and utter contempt for the audience he is aiming this piece of tat at, the way he spoon feeds michaels constantly downward spiralling disposition from the sain to insanity ooooooooooooooooooooooooo what a guy that really creeped me out you fucking cocksucker zombie stick to making your shit records as all ive seen from your directing is patheticness who does this guy think he is proper directors have stayed clear of this remake for a reason the ego this guy must have i cannot even register it and all you pricks who think that the remake is a good one you have not a clue what you are all talking about burn in hell zombie and all your fans the remake sucks worse than any other remake i have ever seen you wanna be fucking ashamed of yourself
  • I just watched this last night, and I have no idea what the fuck people expect. All you amateur filmmakers, good luck doing a better job.

Zombie might be an egomaniac but he knows his shit and he puts it across. If you're looking for an Oscar winning slasher flick, maybe try some M. Night Shama-lama-ding-dong. If you want disturbing scenes of put-yourself-in-their-shoes horror along with some cheeseball laughs and a realistic gore factor, take your chances with Halloween. It's two hours of your life, reflect on it with some dignity instead of crying about how your classic has been 'tainted'.

ps. "Transformers was so fake! Not at all like I imagined it would be if GIANT ROBOT VEHICLES came to life!"
  • robb zombie should be ashamed of himself...
his halloween IS the WORST re-make of a classic EVER...
what a blatant try hard... that didnt even try..

he must be so embarrassed about it.

if you, like me, bought this stinker from a sale bin in the dvd shop ...watch his commentary...

he is nothing but a self indulgent egotistical no talent boob that is duller than this movie...

    but he likes himself...thats obvious...

that look he is trying to display...alternate rocker or what the f*#k?

hey robb go back to being a second rate old man rocker.

sorry ...just furious that people do this to such classics..
  • the critic is right, this halloween does hold its own. Characters and a couple of scenes might of seemed extra brutal and over the top but thats rob zombie..what can you say. Not quite as good as the orignal carpenter film but like critic said..it still is a fantastic film..and i think rob portrayed myers perfectly.

poor animals in the film though :(

  • I watched it tonight. I won't say it's as good as the original, but it brought in a much needed background of MM. It told us why he is who he is. I don't want to see the same movie over again.

Zombie did a great job with the characters. For me, too much gore, but that's ok. I still thought it was scary. The only part I didn't understand is that MM would not harm the children. If you are evil, it shouldn't matter. Maybe he does have a soft side.
  • It was pretty interesting i thought it was worth it because you get to see childhood side of things I also liked zombies other films as well hmmm he also makes decent music too damn man you guys are haters laters.
  • Remakes are, 97% of the time A BAD IDEA.

See the ORIGINAL! Forget this tired asshole who named himself "Zombie".
  • iv seen this film and well like it more than the first halloween, first becasue you actualy get an insite into mike myers, and his reasons for killing. the first one a man in a mask that WALKS after you come on people. as for ' the asylum scenes are to long' if rob zombie made this film just full of action i would hate it as i do with every other horror film that is just constant action. zombie also pays homage to john carpenter within the last hour of the film but does this zombie style which is great.
  • I like horror flicks and I think this one is one of the better scary movies to come out in a long time. What are you people watching to think this movie is so bad? I thought the acting was fine. The step dad character was great, Sheri Moon was bang on as the washed up stripper mom, young Mike was believable and Mcdowell was perfect. The trick is to not compare this movie to the original but compare it to most of the boring, cheesy horror Hollywood has been puking out over the last bunch o' years. I think Zombie is becoming a better film maker with each release. If the best elements of the last 3 Rob Zombie movies were put to film you would have a masterpiece. Keep em coming Rob. Other then the first 2, this is the best Halloween in the series and I recommend it to any fan of horror. So go check it out ya' freaks!!
  • This movie was not what i expected it to be....... it sucked!!! Just like the person above, i felt that the asylum scenes where way too long and it took forever for the action to start. Rob Zombie not only ruined the series but he changed up the original story of the original halloween. For example,In this movie Michaels mother is a stripper but in the john carpentor version the mother looked like a business woman. Ill end it here but i thought that i had to write about this horrible excuse for a remake. Dont waste your money!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • I HAVE seen this movie and i'm with Aaron. Not one thing good or creative about it. I did not care about one of the characters and when Michael finally gets the "Real" mask...I actually looked at my watch going " f*&k I have like another hour to go". Sherri moon should not act anymore PERIOD. I dug seeing the "Rejects' in there but they were all totally pointless. I'm not a critic or anything like that. I was just lucky enough to get to go to a press screening and by lucky I mean I got to save my Ten bucks!!! Good luck getting through this one kids.
  • Errr, from the clips I 've seen....bad acting. What is with the new Loomis' "what the hell?!" he keeps repeating when Laurie gets dragged out of the car window,AWFUL.In fact the above
review is pathetic and laughable, this guys a total Zombie fan, even kissing Rob Zombie's wifes ass!If you're biased, don't write a review cause it's not pure.I don't know where you've been these last five years but there are a ton of amazing horror films,I'd like to see how this film is going to make me fall to my knees and thank Rob Zombie like you did.
  • I haven't seen Halloween yet, and i'ma hit the theater on Saturday to see it. AI don't see why people get so touchy on film remakes, maybe I feel this way because I'm of a younger generation, but, most, not all, but most remakes of movies, to me, have made the originals further liked, The Fog plain sucked, but, The Texas Chainsaw remake, and the beginning, it made tht series better because, honestly, special effects weren't up to par way back when, which is where the remakes color in those sketchy areas. No matter the outcome, Rob Zombie's Halloween will be great.
  • Hey buddy... I got a Taco Deluxe Supreme talkin' back at me, so ahm gonna be a while.

    *Pause*

    Bidness?
This here is not your bidness...
  • I attended a test screening and while I can't comment on any of the last minute reshoots what I saw on the screen was pretty much what I expected from Rob Zombie. To clarify, I'm not a fan of Zombie's writing or filmmaking skills but I did hold out some hope because it is Michael Myers and nothing could be worse than Halloween: Resurrection, right? Maybe, maybe not. Just like his earlier films, characters drone on and on with atrocious dialogue that sounds uncomfortably like the wannabe Tarantino knockoffs that followed Pulp Fiction. If you think I'm just being a hardass good luck getting through the asylum scenes without rolling your eyes and checking your watch. But while you're suffering through those scenes distract yourself by laughing at the stupid paper masks and long hair that makes Michael look like a heavy metal album cover from 1983. And remember what a freaking masterpiece of suspense the orginal Halloween was just in terms of its pace, lighting and cinematography (I know, I'm going down the film geek path here)? Well who needs that when you can have crappy comic book angles and 3-second jump cuts to pump up the action. That's right - action - not scares - not even a cheap jump out of your seat moment. Bottom line, if you like Zombie then you'll probably like this one but for everyone else who wants a real horror movie (maybe even an original one) let's just hope this one tanks so our memory of the original won't be tainted for long.
