Have you ever played telephone? You know, the game where someone says a word and you go around in a circle whispering the word to the next person until you hit the last player? You start with a word like apple and somehow wind up with supercalifragilisticexpialidocious. Be warned because the news below is fantastic but there’s a good chance we could be playing some movie casting telephone here.
According to Ain’t It Cool News, German actor Matthias Schweighöfer told the German edition of GQ, he’s up for a role in Kenneth Branagh’s Thor. Matthias who? You may have seen Schweighofer in Valkyrie, but his potential casting is far from the big news in this article. Drum roll please – Schweighöfer said Jude Law and Robert DeNiro have joined the cast.
This is huge. The cast is already impressive but this would make it epic. I’m going to remain skeptical about the news until it’s confirmed, but I can’t help but to wonder who they’ll be playing. We’ve barely seen any storyline details so it’s nearly impossible to match them with a character. There’s also a strong possibility they’ll be playing entirely new characters in the film.
At the moment, this is where the cast stands: Chris Hemsworth is playing the titular character, Tom Hiddleston is Thor’s enemy Loki, Natalie Portman is Thor’s human love interest Jane Foster and Jaimie Alexander is Sif, a warrior and another love interest of Thor’s. Colm Feore and Stellan Skarsgård have also been added to the cast, but little is known about their characters other than that Feore’s will be a villain. Then there’s Samuel L. Jackson who’ll appear as Nick Fury as part of his nine-movie deal with Marvel. As for DeNiro, Law and Schweighöfer, we’ll just have to wait and see.
