Robert Downey Jr. Circling A Musical Comedy About Theater Camp![]()
While the man's popularity is absolutely legitimate, it's insane how many stories we write about Robert Downey Jr. To put it into context, the man has been mentioned in relation to lead roles in nine different major upcoming movies in the past six months (Oz: The Great And Powerful, Gravity, Yucatan, Sherlock Holmes 2, The Avengers, Iron Man 3, Emergency, How To Talk To Girls and Inherent Vice). Of course, he won't be doing all of those films - he's already dropped out of Gravity - but to call him Hollywood's go-to actor would be an immense understatement. Naturally, this story is about Downey picking up yet another project.
THR reports that Downey Jr. is now circling to star in an untitled musical comedy movie pitched by Brian Yorkey and Tom Kitt, the writers behind the Broadway show Next to Normal. In the story, Downey Jr. would play one of a pair of Broadway songwriters who go broke after their newest show absolutely bombs. Needing jobs, the two decide to take up positions at a theater camp that they both went to when they were kids. In addition to possibly starring in the film - he's not officially signed on yet - the actor will produce through his Team Downey label, the production company set up by him and his wife earlier this year. Should he decide to take the part, Downey would both sing and play the piano in the film. Now's the time that I have to ask?: has anyone ever listened to "The Futurist"? I, of course, refer to the album released by RDJ back in 2004 prior to reclaiming his role as a major movie star. The album was called "laudable" by All Music and USA Today said that "Downey is a more thoughtful, intuitive artist than Lindsay Lohan or Bruce Willis" - though that's hardly saying much. The only song I've heard from the actor is the track called "Broken," and that's only because it plays over the end credits of Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (I will admit that I only just learned that). Given the man's acting talent level, however, I wouldn't be surprised if the man is a musical virtuoso. |
