Rock Of Ages And That's My Boy Get Demolished At Friday Box Office
Though Rock of Ages and That's My Boy are the weekend's big new Hollywood releases, it's still all about Madagascar 3 and Prometheus at the box office. Both of last weekend's top films are easily holding on to their #1 and #2 spots, with $9.9 million and $5.8 million on Friday, respectively. According to estimates at Deadline that should be good enough for a $33.5 million weekend for the animated Madagascar and a $20.5 million weekend for Prometheus-- and even though it's a huge 72% drop from opening weekend for Prometheus, the weekend's new competition isn't putting up much of a fight.
Rock of Ages, the star-studded new musical featuring a much-ballyhooed performance from Tom Cruise, made $5.3 million Friday on its way to an estimated $15.5 million weekend, and the R-rated Adam Sandler comedy made $4.5 million, with $14 million estimated for the weekend. A fair yardstick for Rock of Ages seems to be Hairspray, the last musical directed by Adam Shankman, which opened to $27 million in 2007. And That's My Boy's opening will be the lowest for a Sandler comedy in a decade-- even Funny People and Jack and Jill opened bigger than that.
Overall the weekend is on par to be 15% behind this time last year, which was led by the notorious bomb Green Lantern. Bad news all around for the industry, even just a week after both Madagascar 3 and Prometheus performed better than expected. Are you guys out there seeing anything this weekend, or are you joining your fellow American moviegoers and choosing to stay home this weekend?
