The impossible has happened. I’m excited about a remake of Barbarella. Why? Variety says Robert Rodriguez has been hired to direct it.

The original Barbarella was the 1968 equivalent of softcore porn, with Jane Fonda as an oversexed woman living 40,000 years in the future. She’s sent on a mission to save the world, and in the process keeps losing pieces of her clothing. Rodriguez proved he has a flair for campy, trash cinema earlier this year with his brilliant zombie movie Planet Terror, and this should be right up his alley. I can’t wait to see what he does with it.

The next question to be answered is who will replace Jane Fonda, because even though she’s incredibly well preserved for her age, it’s still for her age. A few weeks ago Kate Beckinsale was rumored to be in the running for the part, but so far that hasn’t gone anywhere. Now that they have a director, expect a leading lady announcement sooner rather than later. What’s Rose McGowan up to... besides sleeping with Rodriguez that is.
