For every interesting movie he makes, Robert Rodriguez seems to make two crappy kids movies. Oh come on, the Spy Kids movies are mostly gimmicky junk and they only get so much credit because he directed them. And don’t get me started on that 3D aborted ripoff of The Neverending Story he calls Sharkboy and Lava Girl. Whoever owns the Neverending Story rights ought to have Robert’s ass in jail.

So now that he’s done something cool with Planet Terror in Grindhouse, it’s reasonable to expect at least one crappy kids movie from the shoot-from-the-hip, cowboy hat wearing, guitar playing director. The rumor started over at the Latino ReviewAICN where they did some name dropping to let everyone know they’d talked to their buddy Robert and he said that The Jetsons is indeed one of the projects Warner Brothers has approached him with. He hasn’t signed up to do it, but it sounds like he’s really up for it.

While very few of these cartoon to movie adaptations ever work out, I have to admit I kind of enjoyed the first live action adaptation of The Flintstones. They had the right cast in Rick Moranis and John Goodman, and the movie was just a lot of fun. ‘The Jetsons’ has always been nothing but a futuristic clone of ‘The Flintstones’, so if they could turn that into a good time at the theater maybe someone could do the same for this as well. I just wish it didn’t have to be Robert Rodriguez.

Granted his sugared up approach to filmmaking is probably simpatico with the short attention spans of kids, but he’s such a talented filmmaker it just seems like such a waste of his time. I mean, just about anyone could make a movie version of The Jetsons. He’s probably not going to bring anything to it that you couldn’t get from say, Tim Story. Tim Story on the other hand, could not have made Planet Terror, and speaking as a fan of Rodriguez’s work, if Robert is going to make movies I wish he’s spend his time a little more wisely.
