Roland Emmerich Planning Found Footage Alien Invasion Film As His Next Project![]()
When thinking about Roland Emmerich, it's hard not to think about alien invasion. What's funny, however, is that he's really only made one film in that genre, but it is certainly a keeper: Independence Day. His next film, Anonymous, is a political thriller about William Shakespeare, but once that's released next September, it looks as though Emmerich will return with some extraterrestrial material.
THR reports that the German director has been secretly working on an alien invasion flick called The Zone. In the style of The Blair Witch Project, Cloverfield, Paranormal Activity and Diary of the Dead, the film will be made using a "found footage" angle and cast unknowns in the all of the roles. The report says that two of the leads have already been cast, one a "haggard journalist in his 40s or 50s," the other his camera man, "a black man in his early to mid 20's." While I know some people complain about getting motion sickness while watching these films, that's not really the biggest story I have with this movie, rather it's the over-saturation of the premise. Studios salivate over it because they are typically cheap to make, but the more and more movies we see using the same gimmick cheapens it. Blair Witch had a spark because people weren't sure if it was real or fake. Cloverfield succeeded because it was an interesting take on the monster movie. I'm not sure what The Zone has going for it. |
