Roland Emmerich Wants An Independence Day 2, But Fox Doesn't? image
I imagine Roland Emmerich gets asked about an Independence Day sequel every time he does press, because really, who doesn't want to find out what happens next to President Thomas J. Whitmore, or hotshot Captain Steven Hiller? But believe it or not, Emmerich is one of those people, and has a script written for an Independence Day sequel. But that doesn't mean you should count on seeing it any time soon.

Latino Review asked Emmerich about sequel plans over the weekend, and Emmerich says it's likely to happen with Fox, but there are a lot of money issues to work out first. "FOX has not quite figured out how to incorporate Deanís and my deal, and Willís (Smith) deal. Will wants to do it in some sort of a package they can live with."

Believe it or not, Fox actually had the balls to suggest doing the movie without Will Smith-- and, what, center the movie around Jeff Goldblum's character?-- but Emmerich stopped that idea in its tracks. "I said Will is essential for us, for this movie and actually for the audience too. And, so, it's in limbo and lately the studios are fighting." The problem with Smith is that he gets a percentage of the gross, making him an expensive star-- albeit a star who always, always opens action movies well. Emmerich noted correctly that Smith is the only "gross player" who earns it, so presumably they're trying to find a way to write everyone else out and focus the movie around the one guy who's worth the cost.

I really don't see how an Independence Day sequel could actually work, given how Emmerich's movies have only gotten bigger and worse since then, and the whole thing seemed to be a weird kind of magic that would only work once. Kind of like how the Men in Black and Bad Boys sequels was awful, Independence Day seems like a Will Smith phenomenon that should be kept in the 90s.
