Let me be completely serious for just this one time in my whole life (and I promise I’ll never do it again): I feel a little odd writing about movie predictions after this past week. As a New Jersey resident and native son we are still living in an area dealing with no power, no gas, and a widely destroyed swath of real estate that’ll take years to rebuild. It's been a crazy week. But alas the movie world, and life, goes on so here we go. Couple of big flicks on the slate with Honest Abe and Bond...James Bond.
Just remember, I'm not reviewing these movies, but rather predicting where they'll end up on the
Look, I’m not much of a Bond fan. His particular brand of GQ nonchalance and highly efficient killing skills doesn’t really mesh with my own sort of sitting around on the couch in my boxers and kind of just complaining about stuff veneer. But Bond’s icon status and historical role helping develop the Hollywood superspy/ super-agent, the superhero without a costume (unless you count the double-breasted Brioni suit and size 10 Church’s as a “uniform”) is the stuff of pop-cultural legend. He is the spy to which all other spies are compared, dissected and often regurgitated. Most modern day super-agents are either of the muscled-up in your face bravado or masters of deception and disguise. Bond is neither. Instead, he’s a throwback to a bygone day of class and character relying on little more than casanova charm, good looks, a semiautomatic and celebrated libido.
And if you’re a Bond fan (or even if you’re a movie fan) the latest in the franchise, Skyfall, will not disappoint. Marking Daniel Craig’s third turn as the Martini-drinking, lady-killing, bad guy slaying MI6 agent, this film has critics dropping their own metaphorical panties in his wake. Director Sam Mendes (Away We Go-67% Revolutionary Road-68%) has taken a character, coming off a relative miss in Quantum of Solace (64%) and restored it to the not-too-distant greatness of Casino Royale (95%).
After crushing overseas it is set to take over the states in blockbuster fashion. Cinema Blend’s Katey Rich has already gushed about the character’s resurrection (though admittedly he probably didn’t have far to climb through the dirt) and other critics are loving what they see. Bottom line: it’s a hit. I don’t have to go far with this thing with almost eighty reviews in already so we’ll just keep it where it is and call it a day. The Rotten Watch for Skyfall is
