At this point it's pretty much impossible to cast anyone too unusual as a superhero. If Tobey Maguire, Edward Norton and even Seth Rogen can get out there and fight crime, pretty much anyone can. Still, Ryan Gosling is an actor you'd figure would stick with strictly highbrow fare (he has an Oscar nomination, after all), but Latino Review is saying he might be the newest member of the Justice League.
If their source at Warner Bros. has it right, Ryan Gosling will be playing the Green Lantern in his own tentpole movie, set to start shooting next spring. The Lantern is just one member of DC's Justice League, which has been struggling to get its own movie made for some time now. Given Marvel's plans to make individual movies for each of their own superheroes, the only way to make this flood of superheroes interesting is to make the characters worth watching, and casting an actor of Gosling's caliber is definitely a way to do it.
We all know Iron Man would have been nothing without Robert Downey, Jr., and The Incredible Hulk benefits from Edward Norton's intense acting style. For the Green Lantern to stand up to them remotely well, he needs to be talented, not just some beefed-up pretty face. Gosling fits the bill, and has the legions of teenage fans left over from The Notebook to get people interested. Even if he doesn't actually have the part, they should keep looking for honest-to-God actors-- not just the new hot thing.

Gosling and Berlanti on this movie is like having Katey write the script. I don't think a Dawson's creek writer and the star of the notebook should be doing green lantern. I hope I am wrong.
Thanks for setting me straight, everyone. This is what happens when non-comic book fans try to write about movies these days! I promise to keep doing my research. :)
I'm sorry, but I just have to comment to correct you guys on the blatant and repeated reference to Green Lantern as a Marvel character. He is a DC character, has nothing to do with Iron Man or even Hulk, and the Justice League is a DC franchise and has nothing to do with Marvel's plans for The Avengers. At first I thought it was a typo, but the repeated mistake, I must say, is quite troubling.
Just thought I'd let you know, though I think you'll catch it soon enough, that Marvel will release movies for characters of the Avengers. The Green Lantern and the Justice League are DC properties.
Gosling does seem like a good match for the Green Lantern. I hope this is true!
