When you think about all of the former Mouseketeers, Ryan Gosling is really the only one that managed to sustain a legitimate career. Sure, Justin Timberlake is respectable now, performing in awesome movies like The Social Network, but we mustn't forget that he spent years spitting out bubblegum pop synthesized bullshit as the lead singer of N'SYNC. Gosling, meanwhile, has become one of the best actors in Hollywood, earning an Oscar nomination for his role in Half Nelson and deserving one for his part in Blue Valentine. But it seems as though no actor is satisfied with simply being in front of the camera anymore and now Gosling is making a move behind it.

Reporting out of Cannes, Deadline says that Gosling will both direct and star in a remake of The Idolmaker. A 1980 film from director Taylor Hackford, the film is about a music producer (based on the legendary Bob Marcucci) named Vincent Vacari who transforms a small-time-but-talented saxophone player into a rock n' roll sensation. Already set with a packed schedule, Gosling is currently premiering Nicolas Winding Refn's Drive at the Cannes Film Festival, has Crazy Stupid Love and The Ides Of March coming out later this year, and is set to star in the remake of Logan's Run and Derek Cianfrance's The Place Beyond the Pines.

Though he's been acting since he was 15 years old, Gosling's career is becoming one of the most fascinating to watch in Hollywood. The guy has ridiculous talent and has struck an impressive balance between independent and studio films. It will be interesting to see what he can do with The Idolmaker.
