It’s been a while since we’ve had one of the SNL movies that gained such a bad reputation back in the late-90s, something like A Night at the Roxbury or The Ladies Man. Cast members these days seem to get that spinning off a popular character rarely works, and you’re better off striking out on your own. Now Will Forte and Jason Sudeikis, both of whom have had movie roles recently, will team up outside of SNL in A Good Old Fashioned Orgy.
Yes, you read that correctly. They’ll be joined by Leslie Bibb (recently in Iron Man as the Vanity Fair reporter) in a comedy that Variety says is about a 30-year-old man (Sudeikis) who throws one final party in his parents’ Hamptons retreat—an orgy. Will this be another one of those man-child movies that seemed to all be inspired by SNL? Sudeikis doesn’t exactly do “immature child” well, so I’d count on him to act at least vaguely like a grown-up. Then again, he is throwing an orgy, so all bets are off.
I’ve really liked Sudeikis in his guest appearances on 30 Rock, so I’ll be excited to see him get his own movie role. Then again, the concept is so weird that it’s difficult to get a sense of what they’re going for. While I’m not particularly anxious to see an orgy with all these characters, it would be pretty bold to make a sex comedy that culminates in an actual orgy. I doubt it will happen, and I’m not sure I’d watch it, but that’s a guaranteed way to make SNL—or its cast members, at least—cutting edge again.
