SXSW: Exterminators Reviewed![]()
Exterminators is sort of like First Wives Club, if Bette Midler went too far and started murdering men instead of pulling wacky gags on them. It stars Amber Heard, Heather Graham, and Jennifer Coolidge as part of a group of wronged women sentenced to anger management. Anger management goes awry and they accidentally kill the abusive husband of one of their friends. Most of them agree this wasn’t such a bad thing and they all keep their mouths shut. Graham’s Alex character meets a guy and lives her life, but behind her back Heard’s Nikki and Coolidge’s Stella have developed a taste for revenge. They go into business knocking off asshole dudes for put upon women, using Stella’s pest control business as a cover.
Though it’s a dark comedy Exterminators actually comes off pretty light. It shies away from actually showing us most of the grisly murders and the few we do see are free of blood. It’s not a horror movie, more a relationship movie about three women hanging out, drinking martinis, oh and occasionally killing guys somewhere off camera. Alex is clearly the center of the movie, leaving her more interesting murderous friends as underdeveloped stereotypes, and we’re with her as she blinks into the camera and moons over the perfect guy. Exterminators is occasionally funny and generally entertaining but it’s not likely to stick with you. The cast is great, Coolidge in particular shines, but it wouldn’t have hurt if they’d amped up the tension. There’s nothing here to hook you, just a few middle-aged women having fun. It’s worth noting that Exterminators is an Austin original. The film was shot almost entirely in Austin, and it’s a nice change of pace from the usual 2 or 3 cities almost every other movie, even indie movies, are usually shot in. Hey Hollywood! Austin is awesome. Grab your cameras and come on down. |
