A sci-fi thriller about a man solving the earth’s energy crisis sounds like the kind of post-Inconvenient Truth adventures a studio would have jumped on. And now a studio has jumped on it—but only after it was made by an indie production company. Variety reported today that Moon, starring Sam Rockwell, has been picked up by Sony for distribution.
Sam Rockwell isn’t exactly anyone’s idea of an action movie star—he’s known for roles in little indies like Snow Angels and the upcoming Choke. So maybe his presence in this movie—reportedly about a man who mines the gas that can reverse the energy crisis—isn’t really a sci-fi movie the way we’ve come to think of one. After all, Billy Bob Thornton did The Astronaut Farmer about space exploration, but it was pretty much nothing like Armageddon.
On the other hand, if this is a low-budget space drama, it would be kind of amazing to see. How do you do all those outer space effects with little money? Don’t you just want to see someone try? OK, OK, I admit, we probably won’t see Rockwell walking on the moon. But it would be pretty damn cool, you have to admit.
