Sam Worthington Playing Yet Another Hero As Quartermain![]()
At some point in the distant future, our grandchildren and great-grandchildren will look back at the 10s and think to themselves, "That Sam Worthington. He must have meant everything to them." The Avatar star has a legitimately claim to headlining the biggest movie in history, but he also seems to show up way more often than his actual level of fame would suggest. Even if Clash of the Titans was a misfire in every way, it hasn't slowed down this burgeoning action hero-- THR reports that Worthington is set to start in Quartermain, a sci-fi take on a Victorian adventure hero.
Allan Quartermain was kind of an Indiana Jones figure before even the serials that Indy was based on-- written by H. Rider Haggard, Quartermain is an Englishman supporting his country's colonial efforts in Africa, and is so enamored with the wilderness that he spends nearly all of his time out in the jungles. You may remember him popping up in The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, played by none other than Sean Connery. The movie adaptation won't be based on any of the specific books that starred Quartermain, but will take kind of a Planet of the Apes spin on the original material-- Quartermain returns to Earth after adventures in space and goes on a hunt for a lost friend and a hidden treasure. DreamWorks is producing the adaptation, with Mark Verheiden responsible for the script and Worthington taking a stab at playing producer, alongside Alfred Gough and Miles Millar. Gough and Millar work more often as screenwriters than producers, so I wouldn't be surprised if there's some re-writing going on behind the scenes. At least we know for sure that Worthington will do a lot of shouting and grunting and heroic staring off into the distance-- bonus points if he gets a tunic as short as the one he wore in Clash. |
