Scorsese Abandons Movies

Is Martin Scorsese giving up moviemaking? That’s the word from the guys over at The Movie Blog and Hollywood.com. After repeated Oscar snubs and a career in which he’s done just about everything, Scorsese says he’s done with the studio system and wants to move on to making things no one wants to watch… short films and documentaries. Maybe he’s been hanging out with James Cameron or something. I hope he doesn’t end up in a submarine.

Apparently, he made the announcement at the Marrakech International Film Festival, perhaps hoping no one would notice. This is the sort of news that ought to be screamed on CNN, followed by hordes of movie lovers crying out in disappointed protest.

Scorsese is currently working on a movie about Portuguese priests living in 17th Century Japan. Unless the movie features Ken Watanabe teaching them to fight ninjas, it’s not exactly the kind of note I’d like to see Martin go out on. Maybe I’ll just pretend The Aviator was his last film. If you’ve got to go, go out with madness and a plane crash, not wandering Portuguese priests.
