When Hairspray made the successful transition from screen to stage back to screen, it was inevitable someone would try to follow, despite the cautionary tale of the Producers remake. So the next candidate will be Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, the 1988 comedy that was turned into a Broadway musical in 2005, and now... well... you know the drill by now.
The Hollywood Reporter says that Steve Pink, who co-wrote High Fidelity and Grosse Pointe Blank, will write and direct a remake of the movie. The story doesn't make it clear whether the new movie will be a takeoff on the musical or simply the movie, but it seems like musical numbers won't be part of the package. The story, though, will still be about two conmen in the South of France who team up to take on what seems like an innocent and naive American woman.
The movie will also apparently be updated for the Internet age, which seems likely to ruin a little of the old-fashioned charm of the whole thing. But Pink had some smart things to say to the Reporter, so those definitely count in his favor: "Movies like that, which are so brilliant, the problem with writing them is a) you have to beat those jokes, and it's hard, and b), they're so funny that they defy story logic in a way. So I'm trying to split the difference. Because the cons have to be sophisticated, but you also want their behavior to be totally outrageous and absurd. So I'm trying to find the balance between keeping it massively funny, but then also make the cons credible."
