As I’ve mentioned before, I’m a fan of the Roger Corman classic, Death Race 2000. Mostly I like the film’s campy charm, so I recognize that there’s plenty of room for a remake to improve upon things, although the fact that it’s helmed by Paul W.S. Anderson is reason to worry about any project.
The first still has been released for the remake, and … well, there’s really nothing here to get excited about. It’s Jason Statham, driving a car. What else would be be doing in a Death Race picture?
Looking at the detail of the picture makes me a little worried. On one hand, the pieced-together feeling of the car is appropriate considering the film’s setting. It looks like they’re going a little more Mad Max than racing mobiles, but that’s fair considering the drivers are now convicts instead of racers.
What bothers me is that Statham looks utterly bored in that picture. He doesn’t look determined. He doesn’t even look challenged. He certainly doesn't look like someone in a "death race." He looks like an actor up against green screen who has no idea what he should be reacting to. I’m hoping the photographer just did a piss-poor job of catching any kind of emotion in the picture, but this is a Paul W.S. Anderson film, so a lack of depth that bad wouldn’t surprise me terribly.
Take a look at the image below and tell me if you see something I’m missing, because this just seems… blah.
