See Matthew Fox As Racer X In Speed Racer

Your first chance to see Matthew Fox in costume as Racer X is here. Yeah, I don’t know who Racer X is either. But if you’re one of the handful of people who’s still obsessing over Speed Racer after all these years, then you know that’s the character he’s playing in the Wachowsi’s semi-live adaptation of the ancient cartoon into a movie. I say semi-live action because just about the only thing live in it will be the actors. No sets, few props, everything is being green screened.

But Fox showed up on ET to give the a tour of the green screen wall he’s been acting in front of, and to let them set in his prop car. I know I’m going to take a lot of flack for this form Speed Racer fans, but folks… those costumes look really stupid. It's as if Matthew Fox is wearing a full body condom. There’s a scene in the video where Fox catches a punch from another actor that’s absolutely laughable. Presumably, this is all going to look better once they fill in all the CGI around them. It can’t possibly look worse.

Speed Racer was a great cartoon that played as prime time family entertainment in Japan. If the movie is up to the standards of most of the cartoon episodes, it should be great family entertainment. But the casting of the women makes me doubtful. They cast a 27 year old tattoo covered abortion rights activist as 18 year old Trixie, and expect us to believe 61 year old Susan Sarandon as the June Cleaver type mother of an 8 year old. If they can make those casting choices work, they should have no trouble convincing us that rally cars can jump canyons. At least the men playing Speed and Pops are the right ages.

That did look pretty bad I wouldn't sweat it too much though. There was a video of an action sequence where Shia Labeouf rolled out of the way of a car that looked pretty horrible but was just fine in the final cut.
