See The Cloverfield Monster-- For Real!

By Katey Rich: 2008-01-17 13:28:20
See The Cloverfield Monster-- For Real! The Cloverfield marketing campaign kept the wraps on their big secret for as long as they could, but now the jig is up. Press screenings have been held, reviews are being written, and finally the world can get a look at the Cloverfield monster. Warning, what’s coming after the link is SUPER SPOILERY. Unlike many of the fan-drawn images that have shown up, this appears to be the real deal.

The Culture Vulture blog picked up the image, thanks to a poster named Gwaka at Unfiction.com. It's just a few frames, but gives a very clear idea of what the thing looks like. I'm surprised at how much it resembles a human-- the big biceps, the rounded head. It seems to have gills on the side, so you can tell it's something that crawled out of the sea. After all the Godzilla-knockoff versions we've seen kicking around the internet, the fact that the monster is not a giant lizard might be the biggest surprise.

Based on the reviews that are out there so far, it doesn’t seem that the monster is really the point of Cloverfield. But hey, who cares! The monster looks amazing, and I don’t even care that I’ve been spoiled. If anything, I’m more excited than ever. What do you think? Has this crazy, Yul Brynner-looking thing made you even more tired of Cloverfield? Or are you already clutching your opening night tickets in your sweaty palm?

I saw the movie at midnight last night and I have to say, I was not that impressed. I mean for what it was, and what kinda of movie they were going for, it does a great job. But honestly, with such a cool monster, how could they show so little and give so little back story. Like I said, I understand that's exactly what they wanted, but come'on, the movie just left me wanting more. Oh and Beth's performance was pretty shittay. Also, to learn that "Cloverfield" is a street outside the production studio, and is no way significant is really lame, just a bad code name. The movie definitely has it's good and great parts...subway anyone? Probably the best part though is the commentary by Hud, the man behind the camera which gives Cloverfield some light comedy among a horrible situation.

Another thing that dissapointed, even though you can't demand it, is there was no quick cut to something crazy or interesting after the credits roll. With the movie leaving so much, adding something cool at the end would've been sweet.

My only question is, why would somebody buy this on DVD to see again? Seen it once, seen it enough.

  1. abelafonte Says:

    Tom,

There was a little snippet after the ending credits. Regardless of what people are saying about playing it backwards and hearing "It's still alive", all you really hear is Rob whispering "help us..."

There's no way they would have a sequel to this movie. If they did, it would probably be lame. (Book of Shadows, anyone?)

  1. Jessica Says:

So Tom what is the monster ???

  1. kboy63 Says:

BTW, for what may have seemed a crass remark in reguards to the writers strike...I certainly don't suggest that there aren't gifted writers. There is simply an obvious trend towards the Hollywood formula of cartoonish digital and musical overload with little emphasis on the actual story. It's rare these days to see films released outside of indipendents that have balls enough to simply tell a story with some integrity.
While reading several reviews after submitting my letter, another writer made a very strong point. That films such as Cloverfield end up being hits, not because they're good but simply because there's nothing else out that's remotely interesting. Films such as the recent remake of Halloween support my observation, where the genuine suspence and drama of the first one has been replaced with senseless violence, gore and a lousy soundtrack. All very marketable, but boring none the less.
Aparently, the Hollywood Coorporations have given up on the opportunity to challenge the publics mind. Once again bowing to appease the lowest common denomiator of intelligence. Seriously now, what's the point of educating yourselves to be better writers, producers and directors if your going to produce pablum?

  1. Melissa Says:

Actually at the very end after the credits, "It is still alive" gets played in reverse. And Cloverfield is an area that is rumored to have had a monster and that's where they got the idea for the location/name.

  1. Juston Dement Says:

So, about the monster, was there more than one or was it just one entire monster and if there was only one entire monster, what was with them saying that some woman was bitten and what happened to her when they took her behind the curtain, what was happening, did something breakout or did the monster wack her with a tenticle that has fangs in it and if it bites you, you die in agonizing pain?

  1. kboy63 Says:

It's not a good sign when you are less than 15 minutes into a film and you really want all the characters to DIE.
LAME, shallow and mostly just boring.
The digital work was impressive but the jolty camera work and darkness made for alot of easy fudgery in the special effects dept.
Dialogue sucked. And THANK GOD the camera man died. But why did they have to wait to the end of the film.
Seriously...if you go to see this film, miss the first 20 minutes ( melrose place casting call rejects ) and it may be tolerable. There was no need for character development. It would have been just as interesting ( better ) if the cameraman never spoke and there was an anonymity to the cameramans identity. Much like the videography of 9-11.
Which by the way...yawn, they made obvious referance to in recreating video images such as people running into the convenience mart and watching the debris cloud blow by.
    Enough.
Thank God the screen writers are on strike. Maybe a scab will write an original script as oppsed to another slummed up remake.
So thumbs up to the digital dept. but wait for it to come to cable and TURN OFF THE VOLUME.

  1. V. Santiago Says:

If you're easily prone to motion sickness avoid this movie at ALL COSTS! My girlfriend had to exit the movie early to barf her guts out in the theatre restroom. The camera work is so shaky that even my iron stomach was churning.
What was this monster & where did it come from? All of the if's and's and why's are not answered in this movie. I'll give it a C-

  1. craziemutant Says:

i don't know, abelafonte. i have audio of the msg foward and backwards. the way it was played in theaters he's saying "help us" and when it's played backwards, he's saying "it's still alive". now the way i got these audio files was someone had posted the reverse version of it online, the one saying "it's still alive". so i ripped it. then took the same file and reversed it back, giving me the movie version the one saying "help us". maybe it was meant to be a double msg.

  1. joe Says:

So basically, what you are all saying, is that it was "The Blair Witch Project" meets "Godzilla". Hated the BWP....most idiotic movie of ALL TIME!!!!

  1. chris Says:

I just saw the movie a few hours ago and I thought the movie was interesting. I don't know why you pussys kept saying your stomachs were churning i felt fine while eating my butterfinger. Well I don't know what the monster is but they do kinda reveal where it came from. In the last scene where rob and that hot peace of ass beth were on the farris wheel in coney, rob is videotaping a few of the ocean when if you look in the back of the screen to the right, you clearly see something fall out of the sky and hit the water, in the end you hear someone saying "help us'. But it dosen't really sound like "help us", it just sounded like someone was mumbling. But played backwards it clearly is "it's still alive". Lilly lives and so does the monster because if J.J. Abrams can keep a piece of shit like "Lost" going for so long. I'm almost positive we will see another Cloverfield.

  1. Chad Says:

Hey kboy63....I would venture to say you were wanting this movie to be horrible BEFORE it even came out. I'm amazed at the "negative" comments about this movie. Did anybody think this movie was going to be shot with a steady cam at ANY time in the movie? Hello?! Did ANY of you morons look at the trailers? What did you expect? Did you just want the freakin' monster to drop from the sky from second one destroying everything AND then explain itself? How boring this old/tired genre has become. Thank GOD somebody had the balls to do a monster movie as unique as this. And no.....it's not the shitty Blair Witch Hunt (which was painful to say the least). I bet you people who HATED this movie read the directions on the back of shampoo, because that's exactly what you were wanting...someone to tell you and explain every single detail because you can't use your own imagination or put yourself in the shoes of the characters in the movie. The way this movie was done was suspenseful and beautiful at the same time. The sound was amazing, and when you did see the monster, it was BAD! So go on and bash it. Meanwhile, go write your 5 star review for JUNO or 27 Dresses. NOTE: This movie is A MONSTER MOVIE! IT IS SHOT WITH A HAND CAM. IT IS PURELY ONE PERSON'S PERSPECTIVE....PERIOD! If you didn't get that from all the viral marketing you deserved what you didn't like. And get off these blogs....you're ruining what is a great spin to overdone idea.

  1. Smith Alana Says:

    Cloverfield Ending Credits

At the credits ending of Cloverfield, *Spoilers* the audio from the video cam says, "Help us!". But when played backwards, it says, "It's still alive!" This happens after the end credits of Cloverfield. Assuming the speaker was Rob, he suggests Cloverfield (the monster) is still alive. This also suggests a sequel for Cloverfield 2! *Spoilers*

The Japanese oil company TAGRUATO drops a satellite (Chimpanz III) into the ocean as part of viral marketing (shown at the end of the movie when Rob and Beth were on the ferris wheel). TAGRUATO works with SLUSHO (a slush company), as the main ingredient for SLUSHO is found at the satellite dropzone (deep ocean). While searching for satellite and ingredients, they woke Cloverfield (the monster).

The main ingredient of Slusho apparently turns a tiny fish into a HUGE whale, which explains the size of Cloverfield.

Rob apparently was going to be the Vice President of TAGRUATO in Japan.

  1. greyskull Says:

I got motion sickness and almost hurled my nachos...

  1. Jesus Says:

I think the Slusho ingredient is what makes the parasites explode people they bite, because there was something about "expanding properties" or something in the viral marketing.
It is possible that that made the monster big, though. Good theory.

  1. Chris Says:

Alright, Tom. Just think about it.
This was filmed on Someone's Camera, But think about how many people had Cameras. It Say's the Goverment found it...but what else did it find. The reason it left you wanting more is because They want you to wait until they do. And at the end, You hear Rob saying 'Help Us'. Play that backwords (As I have done.) and you can hear them say, surprisingly clearly, "It's still alive!"
What else does it mean? Rob is still alive as well. ^^

  1. Eheheheh. Says:

    2010. Prepare yourselves.

    "It's still alive..."

  1. me Says:

    yeah
i was like totally hungry when i watched it and............
yeah not good for the stomach
    like at all

it was good till the ending

    it made me mad

  1. Nigel Says:

Im so excited to see the monster XD

  1. Andreas Says:

i enjoyed this film.At the end of cloverfield it says help us. But if you record it backwards it says its still alive. the monster is called kongas.

  1. Roger Says:

Where did "the monster is called kongas come from?

  1. LIAM MAUGHAN Says:

RIGHT U NERDS I KNOW WAT THE MONSTER IS AND IT IS CERTAILY NOT GODZILLA OR ANY OF HIS FRIENDS IT IS A SEA CREATURE THAT HAS BEEN ASLEEP FOR THOUSANDS OF YEARS AND IT HAS WOKEN BECAUSE OF A UNDERGROUND EARTHQUAKE OH AND ITS NAME IS CLOVER AND IT HAS LITTLE TERMITES ON IT THE SISE OF PEOPLE AND WHEN CLOVER SCRATHES ITSELF THEY FALL OFF AND EAT EVERYBODY SO DOSE THAT SOLVE YOUR PROBLEM NERDS
