There’s something fun about the process of going to a 3D movie, putting on the dorky glasses along with everyone else, including the cool guy who has probably dragged his kids there. But now, if the technology mongers who rule the world have their say, you could enjoy 3D technology in the privacy of your own home. And we all know what happens next: 3D porn!OK, probably not. But amid The Hollywood Reporter’s very lingo-heavy article, there are some cool implications for what kind of home viewing experience we’ll be having in a few years. Basically, a lot of different companies that provide us with DVD players have different ways to provide 3D, which becomes complicated when you want to buy a DVD that is guaranteed to work on whatever system you’ve got. Studios are excited about 3D right now because it’s the kind of movie you can’t just download or get on DVD. Trust me, Journey to the Center of the Earth would not be nearly as entertaining without 3D glasses. But if you can actually catch these at home, are you going to bother to see them in theaters? Or is the theater experience so much more immersive that it’s worth the $12? Personally, I can’t imagine having half as much fun at something like Journey without the kids in the audience to laugh at the lame jokes, so for now, I’ll stick with the theaters. But the prospect of watching How I Met Your Mother or, hell, American Idol in 3D? (Once they’re on DVD, that is) That’s worth staying home for.
