See Zoe Saldana As Nina Simone On Set Of Biopic
Zoe Saldana’s caught between blockbusters at the moment. She wrapped production on J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek Into Darkness, which reaches theaters next summer. And she’s waiting for James Cameron to give the greenlight for his next Avatar film (which could turn into a series of films, depending on how ambitious Cameron is feeling at the moment). As she waits, Saldana signed on to play famed jazz musician – and civil rights activist – Nina Simone for a planned biopic.
The first images of Saldana on set as Simone have reached the Web. We have them for you below, courtesy of TomAndLorenzo.com:
Not sure why Simone is holding stuffed animals in two of the pictures, but the period costuming look good, and Saldana’s as gorgeous as ever. Simone fans will likely debate whether of not the actress looks enough like the late singer-musician to play her on screen. In fact, in the comments section on the page, readers already have been wondering why Mary J. Blige didn’t land the role (as had been rumored).
The casting surrounding Saldana on Nina has been interesting, to say the least. Mike Epps signed on to play stand-up icon Richard Pryor in the biopic, while David Oyelowo (The Help) will play Simone’s manager, Clifton Henderson. Powerful musical producer Jimmy Iovine co-produces the drama, which we hope will feature some powerful musical scenes before it gets into Simone’s civil-rights efforts. Nina is being written and directed by Cynthia Mort, a TV writer making her directorial debut. Look for it in theaters in 2013.
