Big surprise folks, Serenity is dead. Alright, there was never much hope of a theatrical sequel, after all it was one of the biggest box office flops of 2005. But some fans had been holding on to some wild hope that somehow the movie would get a straight-to-video sequel based on DVD sales of the film.
Well forget it. It's flopped nearly as badly on DVD as it did in theaters, and now Joss Whedon has come right out and said his wannabe Science Fiction franchise is forever scrapped. On his blog Whedon says, "There's no sequel, no secret project regarding Serenity or somesuch and I'm not even sure how anyone thought there was talk there." He goes a little further, "So let's put that to bed and smother it with a pillow." Ouch. Joss sounds a little bitter.
Who can blame him? Serenity is one of the best movies that no one has ever seen, and it's about to be forever forgotten. Maybe ten years from now it'll be regarded as a cult classic, but right now it seems certain never to make inroads anywhere outside of the tiny, obsessive fanbase Joss has gathered around him. What a shame.

Whedonesque is not Joss Whedon's blog. It's a fansite. Joss Whedon does post there from time to time, and did make the post you cite, but it's not his blog. See Whedonesque's about page: http://whedonesque.com/?read=about CanMag made the same mistake.
That is not what Joss said. His comment on Whedonesque was responding to rumors that there sequel in the works NOW, and he was saying there isn't one NOW. I didn't see the words "never", "dead", or "forever" anywhere in his comment. Taking things out of context much?
They were not taken out of context, the quotes are printed exactly as he said them and I included a link to the place where they originally appeared for reference.
I understand how DESPERATE some of you Browncoats are, but I'm sorry. It's not happening. It's over. Give it up folks. It's a shame, but that's the way it is.
Last I checked, there's a huge difference between saying "nothing at all is in the works" to "it will never ever happen". Goes to show you anyone can say anything on the internet and say it's fact.
To Jon Dog: I really hope that some day, maybe four or five years from now when all the Browncoats have finally died off enough that it becomes respectable for normal people to watch it, Serenity will become a cult classic. It's such a great film... it pains me to think that it'll be completely forgotten.
You know I really don't understand when people get all touchy when it comes to "browncoats". You don't seem to like the fans of the show and movie but you indicate you are a fan.
ANYWAYS Joss posted a comment today on whedonesque(not his blog, I see you haven't bothered fixing that error too). Let us see how you can spin his comments now, or I guess you will conveniently ignore it and maintain that Joss said "Serenity is dead". What a republican thing to do. lol. What is that expression? Never say never? ;)
i love firefly and serenity and it upsets me to hear the bad news, but hopefully in a cuple of years Mr. Joss Whedon will finish off the firefly series.
Serenity is the best science fiction film of the decade thus far. Firefly is the best science fiction show ever. That being said, the only thing that will bring this franchise back from the dead is renewed interest in it. That will not happen for some time. One thing is for certain, Nathan Fillion has a bright career in front of him - I predict that he will be one of the leading men in Hollywood within the next 5 years. On the downside, I fear that by the time interest in Firefly/Serenity is resparked (and it will be, it always is with Sci-Fi; Battlestar Galactica, Star Trek, The Twighlight Zone, etc.), that the current cast will be too old or too busy. Recasting and re-imagining worked with BSG (frankly it was needed), however with Firefly/Serenity it would be heresy!
