Serenity Isn't Dead Yet

By Rafe Telsch: 2006-10-08 00:00:00
Serenity Isn't Dead Yet Last week we reported about Joss Whedon’s death knell for “Firefly” and its film life as Serenity. Whedon announced to the press that the project was dead with no future plans and that he wasn’t even certain why anyone thought plans even existed.

Apparently, the creator of “Buffy, the Vampire Slayer” and “Firefly” spoke too strongly and, although the press ran with it, they did run in the implied direction.

Now Whedon is saying the rumors of Serenity’s death have been greatly exaggerated. He didn’t mean to say the project was dead forever, just that no current plans existed for the franchise to carry on. Whedon’s new statement, made to Whedonesque carries his usual style: I will absolutely, posatively [sic] never ever do any kind of Serenity sequel or spinoff unless a studio asks me. Politely. Or meanly, that's cool too.

The smarmy explanation might also be misconstrued as false. After all, it is part of a lenthy post where Whedon also claims “lonelygirl” has been cast for his upcoming Wonder Woman film in the title role and that the CW has given him a green light for a “Buffy” spin-off focused on the first slayer among other false statements. However the final part of the post features Whedon explaining how hard it is for him to let go of past projects and that he promises to let fans know as soon as anything is in the works in any of his created universes.

In other words, nothing is dead until Whedon says it’s dead, and he ain’t sayin’ nothin’ yet, other than there’s nothing to be said for now. Not never, just now.

  • I thought Serenity was a far better "space movie" than anything else I have seen since "Galaxy Quest." I thought the acting was fine (better than any Star Wars movie) and I thought the movie was well-written, well-paced, and generally a good time.

Will there be more? Probably not. It is notoriously difficult to market. However, I would like to see additional action from Joss Whedon's Serenity/Firefly universe. Serenity and Firefly make it fun to be back in a crappy spaceship, on the rough edge of space, like we were in the original Star Wars movies. And if there ever can be more (in any form) I enjoy these characters enough to pay the cover charge.
  • I was sad that Serenity had bad acting. Reminded me of Star Wars.
  • Its only sad if you say so. I prefer to take action (three associates at my office have been introduced the Firefly and Serenity DVDs this month alone). We knew (and know) the show is a hard sell... we just roll up the sleeves and get to work. Talk about show, raise money for charities in its name. I'm happy... proud even, not sad.
  • This is just sad. Even if it's not dead in the minds of fans, it's dead as far as the real world is concerned. Maybe 30 years from now Sci Fi will ressurect it a la Battlestar Gallactica (complete with Mal recast as a woman), but until then it's really time to let it go.
