Evan Goldberg and Seth Rogen are responsible for writing one of the best buddy comedies of the decade, Superbad, and I promise they will wow you again with August’s Pineapple Express. So it makes sense that, as they embark on writing a huge comic book adaptation, they’re thinking of it as just another buddy comedy. A really, really expensive buddy comedy.
Talking to ComingSoon.net about his Green Hornet movie, Rogen said, “We've always wanted to make this hero sidekick movie. [The Green Hornet] is the only kind of hero whose sidekick is actually more known than he is.” The sidekick, of course, is Kato, who was famously played by Bruce Lee on the short-lived 1960s TV show. So while Lee won’t be back, it seems that Kato will be an integral part of the story this time around as well. ” We kind of thought that it would be a good way to tell this relationship story and just do a big crazy action movie basically,” Rogen said.
And Rogen and Goldberg have a big middle finger for anyone who would claim that the two guys, known for comedy, can’t handle the action scenes a superhero movie would require. “People have just been like, "Bullsh*t that Seth Rogen can do that" unless Pineapple comes out first,” Goldberg explained. As the world will see soon enough, in Pineapple Express Rogen and Goldberg can not only write an action scene, but Rogen can kick ass and take names with the best of them. Rogen says proving that was kind of the point when landing the Green Hornet movie. “We showed them some scenes from Pineapple literally in the pitch for that. We were just like, "Look, we can write action scenes."
Rogen may not automatically look good in a bowler hat—yet!—but at least he’s proving that he’ll try hard. He and Goldberg really do have a good sense of what makes a buddy movie work, and as long as they tamp down their vulgar instincts—as Rogen suggests they will—I think they’ll be good to go. The Green Hornet opens June 25, 2010.
